North Wales Tour, April 2019

Six SMCTC members (David Billington, Brian Carter, Graham Connell, Roger Hubbold, Tony Moriarty and Pete Williams) undertook a tour of North Wales over four days at the end of April. Organised by David, with routes plotted by Brian and Roger, we rode from home and met at Booths in Knutsford, then made overnight stops in Llandudno, Criccieth, and Ruthin. The first day was a longish ride of ~90 miles (over 100 for Brian). Day two saw the group battling headwinds of 50 mph, as Storm Hannah battered the N. Wales coast. We had a late lunch in Bangor at 2.30pm, having originally planned to stop thereabouts for coffee! Fortunately, after reaching Caernarfon we headed south and had a cross-tailwind. Day three followed a beautiful route from Criccieth to Ruthin, with much climbing and superb views of Snowdon, but also long descents on quiet well-surfaced roads. The final day featured a viscious climb out of Ruthin then a largely flatter ride home through Chester. Total distance was around 260 miles, with over 16,600 feet of ascent, some of it very steep (25%) — a good training ride!

The photos below give some idea of the scenery and terrain of what was an excellent and varied trip. GPX files are available if other members want to attempt this route.
